In week 1, the Jets looked to build upon the upsets of the past playoffs and become a feared team. However the Titans had other ideas. The Titans were able to put together a great running game to keep the Jets off balanced. In the first half, the Jets/Titans traded scores all the way through. The Jets knew they would be getting the ball back in the beginning of the second half and decided to eat up the clock as they droved down the field for a score toward the end of the second quarter. The Jets left the Titans 54 secs on the clock which was, apparently too much time. The Titans drove down the field for the score with 11 secs to go in the half to even the score 21-21.
With the score even, the Jets drove down the field in the third quarter with confidence but were unable to convert a critical third down and had to settle for a field goal. This would later prove to be the difference of the game. The Jets-Titans traded scores until the fourth quarter. The Jets got the ball with less than 5 mins to go in the game and decided again to eat up the clock as they drove down the field. Although the Jets was also able to run the ball throughout the game, they relied heavily on the pass in this drive and it proved to fail them on the last two downs. Mark Sanchez had nowhere to throw on 3rd down and threw the ball away. Facing a 4th and 4 with about a minute to go inside the Titans 35 yard line; Sanchez underthrew Braylon Edwards underneath on a crossing route. Braylon came back to the ball for the catch but the bad throw allowed the defense to recover and stop Edwards just short of the first down. The Titans breathed a sigh of relief as they open their season with a win over the AFC champs, 35-31.
