A rematch of the Super Bowl may be what the Jets need to get back on track. Or maybe not! The 49ers came out the gate smoking! Scoring the first 35 points in the first half. Frank Gore was a beast as usual with scores from 17, 34, 64, and 32 yards. After playing the Niners in the Super Bowl, the Jets knew they needed to be able to stop the run. Ironically, the Dolphins and Titans ran the ball well in the first two games and should have given Jets some practice but it didnt quite work out like that. In addition to the running game; the special teams also gave up a 84 yard punt return. The Jets had no answer on defense and the offense continued to struggle at first. The Jets came into the game hell bent on running the ball down the throat of the Niners. Even though this is uncharacteristic of their offense as a whole; the Jets felt they could throw off the Niners if they had just minimal success. The Niners however had a answer for any suprises because they had one of their own. They recently acquired a DT in an approved trade with the Bills. The new addition was able to help the whole front line get penetration into the backfield on both run and pass. The Jets plan backfired as the Niners continued to shut down the run as they had before and forced Matt Sanchez to throw more. Matt started off poorly due to the increased pressure before getting it going and ending the half with a TD pass to Braylon Edwards. The Jets still ended the half down 35-7.
At this point, the Niners continued excecuting their run game although they used Frank Gore less and less as the game went on for fear of injury. The Niners also started pulling various other starters on both defense and offense; not wanting to risk injury. While deep down they were insulted that the Niners could pull their starters and eased up, the Jets also saw this as an opportunity to mount a comeback as payback for the strategic move. Putting the ball in Sanchez hand they scored 21 straight points to close the gap to 35-28 in the fourth with less than two minutes to go. Sanchez ended the game with 27completions-46attempts, 395 passing yards, 12 rushing yards, and 3 passing Tds. Yet again there wasnt enough time for the Jets to finish the come back.
Sanchez has been rumored to be going to Pittsburg in a blockbuster deal yet today he made it clear that he wants to win here and he wants the ball in his hands now! Sanchez is out to prove he is the best QB in the league and will look to turn around the Jets beginning with this next game.
