I've just played the Arizona Cardinals. And they finally haven't been a CPU opponent. The new owner is Yur Teamate.
I didn't find the game to be as easy as the Cardinals usually are, and to tell you the truth, I usually have a hard time against the Cards. Who thought my rookie quarterback would poop the bed like this?
The game started off like usual. Niners get the ball, drive a little bit, Gore scores a big TD run. (47 yards) The Cardinals drive the remaining 6 minutes, yeah you heard me right... 6 minutes off of the clock and score. The difference was the next two scores were Roc Hargrove getting slammed on the 43 and the fumble being returned for 67 yards for a touchdown! Hargrove must have still been seeing stars, because 60 seconds later he threw an interception that was returned for another score! (21-7) Niners are down! 10 seconds later, Ted Ginn returned the following kickoff for a touchdown! The 49ers defense responded to the shot of life and caused a fumble in the Niners redzone! The 49ers offense responded to the defense picking things up, and 86 yards later, Aaron Scott crosses the endzone with a perfectly thrown pass from Roc Hargrove tying the halftime score at 21-21.
Both the Cardinals and 49ers would score 3 more times. The final difference was that the 49ers scored 3 touchdowns, and the Cardinals scored 2. Secondly, the niners scored last... (49ers 42 - Cardinals 38)
Offense:
Yur Teamate's offense is raw, but has the beginnings of the right things. He started off in your typical 2-back 2 receiver set, but once the game got tight, or he needed to move the ball, he went to 3 and 4 wide receiver sets. Beanie Wells had 2 rushing attempts. His quarterback had 5 rushing attempts. He threw the ball 55 times. This is not a winning formula. This actually the reason I came back to win the game. I gave the Cardinals 5 turnovers. (I can't remember the last time I gave up 4 picks!) 21 points of the Cardinals' points were from the defense. (2 pick 6's) 2 touchdowns were from great field position after turnovers. Granted, he called the plays that got the turnovers needed, but he gave me back 5 turnovers! He should have slowed the game down, and played more fundamental football. (I.E. running between the tackles, etc.) I faced 4 wide receiver sets almost all of the game, and if there was any success, he would hurry up the ball and go to the same play. (with the occational audible) Don't get me wrong... The Spread offense/Run-N-Shoot offense is a legitimate offense, but without balence, the Cardinals might get some wins, score some points, but in the Fun-N-Games league, he won't get ANY playoff wins. The door for error just isn't open that long...
Defense:
This is one thing that impressed me about Yur Teamate. He played fundamental defense! He has lots of skilled players on defense and they made plays for him. (several times!) He didn't get many "user picks" but that doesn't mean he didn't earn them. (4 total) He called a great defensive gameplan, and I think his defense will win him A LOT of games. I say this because he didn't "fall in love" with one defensive set. He was able to cause frustration in multiple fronts. If I had to look for a weakness, I'd say he has 2 weaknesses. (both can be fixed easily) 1.) Open field tackling. It (to put it nicely) left much to be desired. He has the talent to make the tackle. He tried to do to much which lead to some big plays, and scores. (easy fix) 2.) Pass Defense. There was an emphasis on pressure, which while in itself is a good strategy, sometimes you need to just line-up and play defense. Swauney Jones has this issue sometimes. Try to keep the offense guessing.
Ouside of that corrective/constructive critizisim, with a few changes, he could be a destructive force in this league. I'm sure playing in this league will make him better, and the stronger he gets, the stronger the League gets!
