Take this review with a grain of salt. I am growing to HATE the Seahawks, and they haven't even been in the NFC West that long... But this is NOT a rant. (no matter how much it may seem like one.)
Week 14 I played the Seahawks. This is our second game. The first game of the season I played against the CPU. The Seahawks GM's name is Dig Dat Do Dat. He has been in the Fun N Games league for 3 years.
They started the game off doing the one thing that pisses me off the most. The 'Niners were at home, yet he chose his home jerseys. (The Lime Green Vomit ones) I always let the home team decide what color they wear before I pick mine. Two teams wearing their home jerseys is gay... I'm sorry... So I played with my away jerseys. (Grrr....)
The first quarter, I drove about half of it out and stalled on the 5 yard line.(Seattle has good linebackers.) Like I usually do, I took the 3 points, and did not let him goad me in to going for it on his 5 yard line. (He didn't say anything to me... this was all in my head...) I was rewarded by my defense laying down for 80 yards till Nate Clements gave me an 82 yard interception return for a touchdown! His offense was mostly TJ Houshmanzadeh, and Golden Tate. As the game progressed, he went almost completely to the air. But what shocked me was he still tried to run out of the Spread Shotgun formation 4WR. He even got a pretty long run (67 yards) out of that formation for a TD with the running back draw. By this point he had ran the hurry up several times in a row, and ran the draw play several times.
We closed the first half out exchanging TD's. At this point he was only down by 3 points going into halftime. (SF 17- SEA 14) This is when it came unravelled. I stopped him on his opening drive, he went for it on 4th down! (on his own 45 yardline) I stopped him and scored in 1 play. (45 yard pass to Vernon Davis) His next drive he went for it again! I got the pick, and drove and scored. His next drive Dashon Golston returned an interception 56 yards for another 49er score. (21 unanswered points)
He settled down his next drive and eventually scored, but by this point, even with a quarter left, this game was pretty much over. My subsequent drive I had a 4th and 1 on my 44, up by 17 points. I'll be honest, I would usually punt and force him to drive the ENTIRE field, but I was so annoyed that I had to play in my away jerseys, and the amount of times he went for it when he probably should have punted, (I was 1 for 4 on 3rd down) I decided to go for it. 56 yards later Gore ran into the endzone. I stopped him on another 4th down play and eventually scored again, but this game could have been much closer. We had a great game going until he started going for it so early. (SF 59 - SEA 27)
Offense:
Likes to run the 3 & 4 wide receiver sets under the center, but mostly out of Shotgun. He will run the draw when in shotgun, and you should expect to see LOTS of hurry up offense if there is any success passing. When he does pass, (and he will) he is a smart passer and takes the checkdown to his running backs and tight end. But his favorite route is the post to TJ Houshmanzadeh in the slot. He ran that play (with hurry up) OVER and OVER, and over. I think if he punted the ball more, and ran just a little more, he would have been more successful on offense. What suprised me the most was the fact he did not throw 1 screen pass.
Defense:
This is how I beat him. He was very predictable on defense. He will run the 3-4, and 4-3 sets, and likes to play the defensive line. Either the DE when in a 3 down lineman set, or the DT when there are 4 down lineman. In most (80%) of these sets he will bring his safetys up close to the line. He didn't blitz excessively, and when he did, I usually read it and got a 40+ yard pass to someone for a score. It is possible that his 3-4, and 4-3 sets were in response to my "I" formation and double tightend sets, but even when I did go to 3 wide receivers he didn't adjust on defense. The screen pass will beat him. Just make sure you vary it, and don't become dependant on it. Because I was facing lots of run blitzes, I got him on a screen late in the game. Just avoid his strong side cornerback Marcus Trufant, don't give him a short field, (meaning punt the damn ball) and attack (run) the "B" gap.
I hope I get to wear my home jerseys in the playoffs!
